  • This re-ranking stage allows the system to assess factors beyond the initial scoring, such as the diversity of items within the recommended set. For instance, the system may choose to penalize items that are too similar to one another, thereby fostering a more varied set of recommendations.
  • Re-ranking strategies enhance the diversity and quality of recommendations, though their efficacy must be measured using appropriate metrics such as precision, recall, or diversity indices.

  • Freshness/Novelty: This technique emphasizes presenting more recent items at the top of recommendation lists, which is particularly beneficial in scenarios where users prioritize up-to-date information, such as news.
    • Freshness-based re-ranking can be executed using various algorithms, including Bayesian Personalized Ranking (BPR) or Matrix Factorization (MF)
  • Diversity: Users often have a range of preferences, and simply displaying the most popular or highly-rated items may result in a lack of variety.

  • Popularity/Trending: Popularity is one of the most basic and intuitive signals used in re-ranking strategies. Re-ranking by popularity can help surface content that has been validated by a large user base, which can be especially effective in reducing the risk of recommending irrelevant or low-quality items. However, reliance on popularity can reinforce feedback loops, where popular items continue to gain more exposure while lesser-known items remain underexplored. To address this, popularity-based re-ranking is often used in conjunction with other objectives like diversity or fairness.
